In the next scene, Turandot's father tells Calaf to withdraw to save his life, but he does not.
Turandot explains that her cruelty is due to cruelty inflicted upon an ancestor:
She also says: "no man shall ever possess me.
She poses the three riddles.
SPoiler! First answer is: hope
Second answer is blood.
Third answer: Turandot
Since he passed the trial and Turandot still refuses him, Calaf offers to die if she guesses his name before the morning.
